Antonio Granell

Molecular Breeding, Omics technologies

Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP) in Valencia. His fascination with plants as production platforms began during his PhD, where he characterized the synthesis of PR proteins and, more recently, of high-value small compounds (secondary metabolism). After research stays at the University of Pennsylvania (USA), Queen’s University in Ontario (Canada), and UC Davis (USA), AG now co-leads the Plant Genomics and Biotechnology Group at the IBMCP.
In recent years, AG has coordinated major research consortia focused on genetic, phenotypic, nutritional-composition, and flavor variability analysis (Traditom); on adaptation responses to high temperatures (TomGen); and, most recently, on tomato improvement (Harnesstom). He has also been involved in genetic resource management, large-scale data generation, and database development (PROGRACE). Understanding the genetic diversity underlying these traits is key to developing new varieties through breeding techniques, novel genome-editing technologies, or other biotechnological tools. AG is the inventor on several licensed patents and has authored approximately 200 articles in SCI-indexed journals.

José Antonio Darós

Plant virus biotechnology

PhD in Biological Sciences (University of Valencia) with postdoctoral experience at Texas A&M University and Washington State University. He is a Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP), where he leads the Plant Virus Biotechnology Group.
His work investigates plant-pathogen interactions at the molecular level with the goal of developing crop varieties that are resistant to viral diseases. He also designs and implements viral- and viroid-derived tools for plant biotechnology applications. As principal investigator on multiple R&D projects in plant pathogen biotechnology, he has authored over one hundred scientific publications on the subject.

Diego Orzáez

Genetic engineering, Synthetic biology

Diego is a Research Scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP) in Valencia. He began exploring plant biofactories during his postdoctoral fellowship at Wageningen University (Netherlands) and continued in this field upon his return to CSIC under a Ramón y Cajal contract. Today, he co-leads the Plant Genomics and Biotechnology Group at the IBMCP.
In recent years, Diego has coordinated and/or led major research consortia aimed at enhancing plant biofactories through genome-editing techniques (Newcotiana) and at producing value-added compounds for pharmaceutical, food, and agronomic applications (PharmafactorySusphire, Pheroplus). His laboratory specializes in Plant Synthetic Biology, where the GoldenBraid cloning and assembly system was developed, now widely adopted in genetic-engineering and genome-editing labs worldwide. Diego is an inventor on several patents and has authored over 80 articles in international peer-reviewed journals.

Asun Fernández

Senior scientist

Asun holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of the Basque Country and works as a Senior Specialist Technician at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) within the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP) in Valencia.
Throughout her career, she has specialized in plant genetic improvement, plant synthetic biology, and molecular agriculture, gaining extensive experience in optimizing plants as biofactories for high-value molecules. In recent years, Asun has balanced her research activities with project management responsibilities.

Marta Vázquez

Senior scientist

Marta has been a postdoctoral researcher in the Plant Biotechnology and Genomics Group at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP) since 2018. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Salamanca in 2011 and a PhD in Biotechnology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in 2016.
She has extensive experience in Plant Synthetic Biology, with an emphasis on standardizing genetic parts and developing genetic circuits for application in molecular farming. She has made significant contributions to the GoldenBraid technology, including the development of web tools, CRISPR/Cas standards for plants, and SBOL standards for the visual representation of genetic elements.

Federico Grau

Agronomist Engineer and PhD in Biotechnology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) with over 15 years of experience in plant biotechnology projects. After a research stay at Ghent University (Belgium), he joined the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP), a CSIC-UPV joint institute, where he managed industry-collaborative projects until leaving in 2021 to found Madeinplant. He holds a Business Innovation specialization from UPV and a Project Management qualification in Pharma/Biotech and Start-ups from La Salle–Ramon Llull. Since 2018, he has focused on technology valorization and business innovation initiatives.

Mercedes Diez

Biotechnologist from the University of Salamanca, with an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the Free University of Berlin, and a PhD in Plant Molecular Physiology from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPIMP) in Potsdam. Her doctoral thesis focused on improving photosynthesis and plant yield through genetic modification of chloroplasts. She then joined the Plant Protection Products Safety department at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin, where she contributed to the development and implementation of European regulations on toxicology and pesticide safety.

Since 2024, Mercedes has led technical development at Madeinplant, managing research projects and applying her scientific and regulatory expertise in a dynamic environment. 

In her free time, she is an avid reader and enjoys flamenco.

Product Developer

Javier Sánchez Vicente

Biotechnologist with an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Plant Biotechnology. For three years, he worked at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP-CSIC-UPV) in the laboratories of Diego Orzáez and José Antonio Darós, participating in gene-editing projects in Nicotiana benthamiana (transient and stable expression via homologous recombination) and in the development of geminivirus-based viral vectors. He was also part of a team dedicated to virus detection using CRISPR/Cas9 systems.
Since 2022 he has been responsible for R&D&I development lines at Madeinplant.
Synthetic Biology Specialist

Andrea Martín Merchán

Biochemist with a PhD in Plant Biology and Biotechnology, and an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Plant Biotechnology. She carried out her PhD at CRAG, where she characterized key proteins involved in gene silencing in plants. She participated in several projects focused on plant defense against pathogens, virus detection, and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Additionally, she contributed to the functional characterization of essential viral proteins involved in these processes.

In 2025 she joined Madeinplant to develop new synthetic biology tools focused on the design and production of synthetic chromosomes in potato, applying innovative strategies for genome engineering and crop improvement. 

Outside the lab, she enjoys dancing salsa and playing basketball.

Laura Hernández

A biologist with an MSc in Molecular Biology from the University of Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia) and a PhD carried out in the Hormonal Signaling and Plant Plasticity group at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP), a joint UPV-CSIC center. Her PhD focused on a protein complex associated with the HSP90 chaperone in Arabidopsis thaliana, gaining expertise in genome editing, biochemistry, cell biology, and plant physiology. In 2022, she contributed to the National Plan project (PID2019-109925GB-I00) studying prefoldins.

In 2024, she joined Madeinplant as a Product developer.

Laura is passionate about everything that connects her to her roots, from Neotropical flora and fauna to Latin American cuisine and culture. She enjoys hiking and exploring new places.

Daniel Vega

Biotechnologist from the University of Salamanca with an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Plant Biotechnology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He completed his MSc thesis at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP), a joint UPV-CSIC center, presenting a project titled “Comparison of genetic editing and base-editing systems based on CRISPR/Cas9 and CRISPR/Cas12 technology.”

He is currently pursuing a PhD in optimizing gene-editing tools for strategic crops in the Valencian Community.

In his free time, he enjoys hiking and climbing.

Quality Control

Uxue Muñoz

An oceanographer and biotechnologist, she began her molecular biology career at the Torre la Sal Aquaculture Institute, developing DNA vaccines for fish. Her interest in marine-derived biocompounds led her to complete the MSc in R&D in Biotechnology and Biomedicine at the University of Valencia. Afterwards she conducted her master’s thesis work at Madeinplant, where she developed growth factors for the cultivated meat industry.

In 2024 Uxue joined the team as a technician, collaborating on product development pipelines and overseeing quality control, leveraging her prior experience in microbiology and cell culture. 

In her free time, Uxue is passionate about the sea and enjoys swimming and recreational scuba diving.

Product Producer

Nicotiana benthamiana

Native to Australia, Nicotiana benthamiana has established itself as the benchmark platform in plant biomanufacturing. Easy to grow in greenhouses and compact in size, it completes its growth cycle in just 6–7 weeks, generating large amounts of biomass in small spaces.
Its naturally weakened immune system facilitates genetic transformations, which, together with its fully sequenced genome, allows for both transient and stable expression of recombinant proteins with high efficiency.

Thanks to these properties, N. benthamiana is widely used at Madeinplant for the production of biomolecules and as a test plant for biotechnological tools.
