Vision

What if plants could produce much of the goods that humanity needs? At Madeinplant we work to offer innovative and sustainable solutions to global challenges in the fields of food and health.

Team

Our founding team has more than 20 years of experience in plant biotechnology.

Research Prof. CSIC

Antonio Granell

Molecular Breeding
'Omics' Technologies

CSIC Research Professor at the IBMCP in Valencia. His fascination with plants as a factory began during his PhD characterizing the synthesis of PR proteins and more recently that of small, high-value compounds (specialized metabolism). After stays at Penn University in the US, Queens in Ontario – Canada and UC Davis in the US, AG co-leads the IBMCP Plant Genomics and Biotechnology Group. In recent years, AG has been the coordinator of large research consortia aimed at the analysis of genetic, phenotypic variability and nutritional and flavor composition (Traditom), of the adaptation response to high temperatures (Tomgen) and more recently the tomato breeding (Harnesstom) with an interest in the management of genetic resources, massive generation of information and its storage in databases (PROGRACE). Knowledge of the genetic diversity underlying the different traits is key to development of new varieties through breeding techniques, new editing technologies or through other biotechnology tools. AG is the inventor of several licensed patents and over 200 articles in SCI journals.

Research Prof. CSIC

José Antonio Darós

Virus biotechnology

PhD in Biological Sciences (Universitat de València) with postdoctoral experience at Texas A&M University and Whashington State University. CSIC research professor at the IBMCP where he supervises the group Plant Virus Biotechnology. He investigates the plant-pathogen interaction at the molecular level with the aim of obtaining resistant cultivars. He also develops tools for plant biotechnology derived from viruses and viroids. Principal investigator in multiple R&D projects on plant pathogen biotechnology and author of more than one hundred scientific publications on this subject.

CSIC Scientific Researcher

Diego Orzáez

Genetic engineering
Synthetic biology

CSIC Scientific Researcher at the IBMCP in Valencia. Diego began
studying biofactory plants during his postdoctoral stay at the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands), and continued researching in this field upon his return to the CSIC with a Ramón y Cajal contract. Currently DO, co-leads the Plant Genomics and Biotechnology Group of the IBMCP. In recent years, DO has coordinated and/or led important research projects aimed at the improvement of biofactory plants through genetic editing techniques (Newcotiana), and the production of added value compounds for pharmaceutical, food or agronomic uses (Pharmafactory, Susphire, Pheroplus). DO’s laboratory is specialized in Plant Synthetic Biology, and was the developer of the GoldenBraid system, widely used in genetic engineering and genomic editing laboratories. DO is an inventor on several patents and has published more than 80 articles in international journals.

Asun Fernández

Project Manager

Graduated in Biology from the University of the Basque Country, Asun
works as a specialized CSIC senior technician at the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP) in Valencia. During her professional career she has specialized in the fields of plant breeding, plant synthetic biology and molecular farming and has extensive experience in the optimisation of plants as biofactories of high added value molecules. In recent years she has combined her research activity with project management.

Marta Vázquez

Postdoctoral Researcher

Postdoctoral researcher of the Biotechnology and Plant Genomics group at the IBMCP since 2018. Graduated in Biotechnology from the University of Salamanca in 2011 and PhD in Biotechnology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in 2016. Extensive experience in the field of Plant Synthetic Biology , with emphasis on the standardization of genetic elements and the development of genetic circuits for their application in Molecular Farming. She made relevant contributions to the development of the GoldenBraid technology, including the
development of web tools, standards for CRISPR/Cas in plants, and
SBOL standards for the visual representation of genetic elements.

Federico Grau

CEO

Agricultural Engineer and PhD in Biotechnology from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) with more than 15 years of experience in plant biotechnology projects. After a stay at Ghent University (Belgium), he joined the IBMCP (CSIC-UPV joint institute) where he was in charge of project management in collaboration with companies until his departure in 2021 to found Madeinplant. Specialist in Business Innovation (UPV) and Project Manager specialized in Pharma / Biotech and Start-ups projects (La Salle – Ramón Llull), since 2018 he has focused his activity on technological valorization and business innovation projects.

Javier Sánchez Vicente

Biotechnologist

Biotechnologist and Master in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology. He worked for three years in the laboratories of Diego Orzáez and José Antonio Darós on projects for the gene editing of Nicotiana benthamiana, both transient and stable by homologous recombination, and on the use of geminivirus-based viral vectors. He also participated in a project on virus detection using CRISPR / Cas9. Currently, he is responsible for R + D + i development lines at Madeinplant.
